Krakow Dance Theatre: CheckMate
Checkmate is a dance story about chess. Six performers connected by costumes create a dense choreography that reflects both cooperation and tensions resulting from sharing space.
The characters, inspired by chess pieces and brought to life by the performers' movements, refer to important social issues. The queen is a symbol of power and its costs. The king is a metaphor for the struggle for dominance, political divisions and cultural conflicts. The knight symbolises movement, racing and competition; its history reflects the pursuit of the modern world, which is constantly running forward, sometimes forgetting where it is going. The pawn is the everyman, entangled in globalisation, standardisation and patterns. It is a figure seemingly equal to others, but in reality limited in access to goods and opportunities for individual development, dealt the weakest cards in the theatre of the world.
